Your Secure Gateway To Limitless Expansion
Description
Project Overview
One of the Best Speed Accelerator
OneKey is a VPN (virtual private network) that is the easiest and most effective way for people to protect their internet traffic and hide their identities online. As you connect to a secure VPN server, your internet traffic goes through an encrypted tunnel that nobody can see into, including hackers, governments, and your internet service provider.
Consumers use VPNs to keep their online activity private and ensure access to sites and services that might otherwise be restricted.
Companies use VPNs to connect far-flung employees as if they were all using the same local network at a central office, but with fewer benefits for individuals than a personal VPN.
Users and Audience
Our target audience is mainly working professionals within the age 20 - 40.
Project Duration
Mobile Apps | 2020
Problem Statement
- Internet service providers can see the internet traffic and probably logs in the browsing history.
- Free public Wi-Fi is dangerous. It’s trivially easy for a hacker on the same network to read your personal data.
- Security when working remotely. You might be protected on one device, but what about your laptop, smartphone, tablet, and router?

Possible Solutions
Create secure VPN apps are often used to protect data transmissions on mobile devices. They can also be used to visit websites that are restricted by location. Secure access through a mobile VPN should not be confused with private browsing. However, private browsing does not involve encryption; it is simply an optional browser setting that prevents identifiable user data from being collected.
Benefits of using a VPN include the following:
- The ability to hide a user's IP address and browsing history.
- Secure connections with encrypted data.
- Bypassing geo-blocked content.
- Making it more difficult for advertisers to target ads to individuals.
- Get Access to Geo-blocked Services.

User Research
Qualitative and Quantitative Research has been conducted to understand what is their expectation.
Qualitative Research (1 to 1 Interview)
1 to 1 interview has been conducted with a total of 6 participants. Some data are gathered which allow me to explore deeper about the user’s mental model.
- What is a VPN? What do you understand about the function for VPN?
- Have you used VPN before? Why, why not?
- How long have you been using the VPN service?
- How often do you use the VPN service? Why?
- What laptop, tablets and mobile phone do you use to access the VPN service?
- What are your main reasons for using a VPN?
- From which country do you use the VPN service?
- What problems have you ever encountered with the VPN service?
- Do you feel security when working remotely on public WI-FI?
Quantitative Research (Survey)
I did an online survey by using Google Form to gather the data. This is easy for me to understand the user pattern of what they are looking for. The total data of 60 participants being collected.
- Have you used VPN before? Why, why not?
- How long have you been using the VPN service?
- How often do you use the VPN service? Why?
- What laptop, tablets and mobile phone do you use to access the VPN service?
- Do you feel security when working remotely on public WI-FI?
- How do you currently select a VPN service?
- When selecting a VPN what is most important to you?
- When considering which VPN service to use, what information would be most useful to you?
- How many VPNs would you typically want to compare in one visit to a VPN comparison site?
Insight
- Most people don’t use or know about VPNs, Internet security is complex and deep. While there was an increasing public awareness, most understanding was vague and superficial.
- Company is using vpn, more secure when working remotely. Lets you create a secure network connection while using a public network. Using one might seem like something as obvious as "the internet" as a tool that businesses should have in the bag.
- The experience would also have to feel fast and easy, so the user doesn’t feel confused or intimidated, and doesn’t get in the way of what they were doing.
Pain Point
- Not all devices may support a VPN.
- VPNs do not protect against every threat.
- Paid VPNs are more trusted, secure options.
- A VPN may slow down internet speeds.
- Anonymity through VPNs has some s limitations (e.g. browser fingerprinting can still be done).
- Using a VPN is illegal in some countries.
- A safe, top-quality VPN will cost you money.
- Your privacy isn’t always guaranteed.
- Using a VPN on mobile increases data usage.
Define
Persona
Using the results of the survey and interview, I created a persona that embody the traits of the target audience. This helps me understand their primary goal and frustration.
Ken
About
- Age: 30
- Status: Single
- Gender: Male
- Education: Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science
- Occupation: IT Manager
- Income: 6,200/mth
Background
Ken always travels to work, he needs security when working remotely. Ever connected to a public Wi-Fi network and wondered if someone, somewhere might be able to see his online activity? He needs a secure VPN for all the devices to encrypt the entire internet connection to protect all the communications, even over unsecured networks. To protect the information from prying eyes and regain a measure of privacy online.
Goal
Avoid bandwidth throttling, need a secure network to protect internet traffic and keep identities private online.
Frustration
- Using a VPN on mobile will slow down internet speeds and increase data usage.
- A safe and top-quality VPN will cost money.

High Fidelity Prototype
Finally High-fidelity has been produced by referring to the branding guideline. This app's design allows the user to switch between dark and light mode. Dark theme apps can be stunning and incredibly effective at capturing the audience’s attention to key elements of design and copy. Light mode is the contrast it offers and how it aids in readability, specially when using the apps in day times. Here is the prototype link.

PET Strategy
Persuasion, emotion and trust are critical factors to increased conversion. There are PET tools have been implemented to motivate people to make decisions that lead to conversion.
Appearance
Users are able to switch the dark mode or light mood for the appearance setting
(e.g. Bright screens cause digital eye strain. Dark mode apps can prolong the battery life of your smartphone).
This leads to better user performance for mobile apps.
Testing
Usability Testing
After the final prototype has been created, the design proceeds to the usability test. I have invited 3 people to test my design solutions. Some valuable feedback was gathered during this session.
Fastest Server
Challenge 1: The VPN connection is unstable and slows down internet speeds.
Solution: Users are able to choose the fastest VPN and the best for streaming and torrenting.
Switch Router
Challenge 2: VPN connection is suddenly interrupted, your secure connection will also be interrupted.
Solution: With VPN location spoofing, users are flexible to switch routers and make sure the connection is stable.
Future Enhancement
Identify the goals that provide an initial scope projected for the MVP and future builds that is meaningful to the users:
VPNs will focus on authentication (multi factor authentication for users and devices). Applications are becoming more granular and diverse with their ability to source an incredible amount of data on a global basis.
Anticipates smarter applications that are VPN-aware, to further enhance the security of user's data in a VPN header. A number of future services and applications are being considered in the light of the new 5G technology.
Takeaway
From this project, I learned measure the website and mobile apps can be used by everyone, including users with special needs. The experience that a person goes through while using a product. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the needs and goals of potential users, the context, and their tasks which are unique for each product. By selecting appropriate UX research methods and applying them rigorously, designers can shape a product’s design and can come up with products that serve both customers and businesses more effectively.
